Motion Composites APEX A and APEX C Rigid Wheelchair
A rigid wheelchair in triple-butted aluminum from 10.6 lbs., or carbon fiber from 9.7 lbs. as the APEX C. Rated to 265 lbs., seats 12" to 20".
A rigid chair in aluminum or carbon fiber, built to your measurements
The APEX is Motion Composites' rigid wheelchair. The APEX A frame is triple-butted AluLite aluminum with a carbon fiber camber tube and rear rigidizer, at a 10.6 lb. transport weight. The APEX C makes the frame, back canes and rigidizers T700 carbon fiber and brings the transport weight to 9.7 lbs.
Choose the APEX A or APEX C frame, seat size and heights, wheels, casters, footrest, back, armrests, guards and colors, each checked against the APEX order form as you build.
What stands out
Aluminum or carbon fiber
The APEX A frame is triple-butted AluLite aluminum, which Motion Composites says is stronger and lighter than 7005 aluminum. The APEX C makes the frame, back canes and rigidizers T700 carbon fiber.
Clamped rigidizing system
A patented modular rigidizer bar that holds the rear frame steady for efficient pushing while keeping the back adjustable.
Carbon fiber camber tube
Both frames carry a carbon fiber camber tube, standard in black or painted in one of 18 colors.
Bubble levels and laser etched markings
Built-in levels square the caster housings and etched marks make the center of gravity and other settings repeatable.
Wide adjustment range
Center of gravity from 0" to 6", camber from 0 to 8 degrees, back angle from 80 to 101 degrees and five front frame angles.
Twenty frame finishes
Black on the APEX A, High Gloss Carbon Fiber on the APEX C, and 18 colors on either at no charge, with seven highlight colors for the frame protectors.
The Hieline Insight
The APEX suits a full time manual wheelchair user up to 265 lbs. who wants a rigid chair that is light, stiff and easy to tune. Choose the APEX A if aluminum at 10.6 lbs. fits your budget, or the APEX C if lifting the chair into a car every day makes the 9.7 lb. carbon fiber frame worth the upgrade. Take hip width, seat depth, lower leg length and back height before you start, since every size is fixed when Motion Composites builds the chair. Choose your rear wheel size and casters first, because they set the seat heights the page offers. Motion Composites builds the chair to order, so it cannot be returned once it is made.

Common questions
The frame material. The APEX A has a triple-butted aluminum frame and back canes with a carbon fiber camber tube and rear rigidizer, at a 10.6 lb. transport weight. The APEX C makes the frame, back canes and all the rigidizers carbon fiber, at a 9.7 lb. transport weight. Sizes and options are the same. On the APEX C the 70 degree front frame needs the front seat at least 1" higher than the rear, and on the APEX A the ultralight non locking backrest stops at a 19 1/2" back height.
Measure seated on a firm surface: hip width for the seat width, the back of the hip to the back of the knee for the seat depth, the back of the knee to the floor in shoes for the seat to footplate length, and the seat to the shoulder blade for the back height. The order form on the Resources tab shows each setting.
265 lbs. on both frames. There is no heavy duty package for the APEX.
Motion Composites gives a transport weight of 10.6 lbs. for the APEX A and 9.7 lbs. for the APEX C at 16" x 16", without the rear wheels, wheel locks, armrests, cushion and anti-tippers. With wheels and wheel locks the APEX A starts at 18.0 lbs. and the APEX C at 17.2 lbs. The APEX C brochure's specification table says "with rear wheels" beside the 9.7 lb. figure, which its own lightest configuration line contradicts, and the user manual's introduction gives 9.2 lbs.
The front seat height depends on the caster size and fork, and the rear seat height on the rear wheel size. The page offers only the heights on Motion Composites' charts for the parts you chose, in 1/2" steps. Frog Legs suspension forks raise the lowest front height for each caster.
Measured outside to outside, a straight footrest is 2 1/2" narrower than the seat, a 1" taper 4 1/2" narrower and a 2" taper 6 1/2" narrower. The 2" taper starts at a 16" seat. Motion Composites notes that over a 20" front seat height a 2" taper can come out up to 1" narrower.
Fixed height canes are set at one back height from 9" to 21" and take no push handles. Height adjustable straight canes come in four ranges from 9" to 21", are set where you choose inside the range, and take one push handle option. Both adjust the back angle from 80 to 101 degrees.
They come in the same 18 colors plus black. Motion Composites notes the finish on the handrims may differ slightly from the frame, and colors on screen are for reference only. Several gallery photos show colored handrims and accents, which are options you choose.
No. This page offers every size and color on the order form. Custom paint, the custom height rigidizer bar and Motion Composites' EVO Custom requests need a written spec, so they are not offered here.
Motion Composites warrants the carbon fiber frame, back canes, side guards and footplates for life to the first user, and the aluminum frame for life to the first user with an expected frame life of five years. Components are covered for one year. Tires, tubes, seat slings, standard back upholstery, armrests and push handle grips are covered for 30 days.
No. The APEX is built to order to one user's sizes, so it cannot be returned. Motion Composites' warranty covers defects.
No. You can order a APEX from Hieline without a prescription.
No. Hieline does not bill or accept insurance, so the APEX is a direct purchase. Any reimbursement is strictly between you and your insurer.
Yes. Your progress saves automatically in your browser as you go, so you can step away and pick up where you left off on the same device.
Every combination is checked against Motion Composites' own compatibility rules as you build. An option that does not fit your other choices is greyed out with the reason printed on it, and the build cannot be added to the cart while a conflict is open.
