Motion Composites Helio Kids Folding Pediatric Wheelchair
A folding pediatric wheelchair in 7000 series aluminum from 13.1 lbs., or carbon fiber from 11.3 lbs. as the Kids C. Rated to 165 lbs., with a growth kit program for 5 years.
A folding chair for kids, in aluminum or carbon fiber, that grows with the child
The Helio Kids is Motion Composites' folding pediatric wheelchair. The Kids A frame is 7005 T6 aluminum with a 13.1 lb. transport weight. The Kids C makes the side frames, cross brace and back canes T700 carbon fiber and brings the transport weight to 11.3 lbs.
Choose the Kids A or Kids C frame, seat size and heights, wheels, casters, footrest, back, armrests, guards and colors, each checked against the Helio Kids order form as you build.
What stands out
Grows with the child
The depth adjustable back gives up to 3" of seat depth, and Motion Composites' Growth Kit program supplies the parts to widen the chair during its expected 5 year life.
Aluminum or carbon fiber
The Kids A frame is 7005 T6 aluminum. The Kids C makes the side frames, cross brace and back canes T700 carbon fiber and takes about 2 lbs. off the transport weight.
Rigid unibody side frames
One piece side frames with a fully symmetrical cross brace. Motion Composites says a unibody side frame is stronger and needs less maintenance than a two part frame.
Forged vertical axle plate
Sets the rear wheel position in 1/4" steps from 1" to 3 3/4" of center of gravity, or 4" on the Kids C.
WC-19 transit option
The chair can be ordered with WC-19 transit tie-down anchors for riding in a vehicle seated in the chair.
Two color choices
The frame and the footrest hangers each take their own color from 18 choices at no charge, and Newton Air Grip handrims come in the same colors.
The Hieline Insight
The Helio Kids suits a child who uses a manual wheelchair every day and needs a folding chair that goes in the car and keeps fitting as they grow, up to 165 lbs. Choose the Kids A if aluminum at 13.1 lbs. fits your budget, or the Kids C if the adult who lifts the chair will feel the 2 lbs. the carbon fiber frame saves. The choice that matters most for growth is the seat depth: a depth adjustable seat with the depth and angle adjustable back canes gives 3" of depth to grow into, while a fixed depth costs the same and takes the fixed or angle adjustable canes. Take the child's hip width, seat depth, lower leg length and back height seated on a firm surface before you start, and have their therapist check the numbers if they have one. The guided build offers only the combinations Motion Composites' order form allows, so the chair you configure is one they will build.

Common questions
The frame material. The Kids A has 7005 T6 aluminum side frames and cross brace, with a 13.1 lb. transport weight. The Kids C makes the side frames, cross brace and back canes T700 carbon fiber, with an 11.3 lb. transport weight. Sizes and options are the same, except that the 4" center of gravity and the Newton Ultralight package come only on the Kids C.
In two ways. A depth adjustable seat with the depth and angle adjustable back canes gives up to 3" of seat depth. For width, Motion Composites includes its Growth Kit program for the expected life of the chair, 5 years from purchase, for the first user only. The kit covers cross braces, cross brace links, seat sling, back upholstery, front riggings and footplates. The program is separate from the warranty, and we arrange it with Motion Composites when the time comes.
A fixed depth is a 12" to 16" seat sling and takes the fixed or angle adjustable back canes. A depth adjustable seat comes in five ranges, from 12" to 15" up to 16" to 19", takes the depth and angle adjustable back canes, and is set to the depth you choose when it ships. Both cost the same.
Measure the child seated on a firm surface: hip width for the seat width, the back of the hip to the back of the knee for the seat depth, the back of the knee to the floor in shoes for the seat to footplate length, and the seat to the shoulder blade for the back height. The order forms on the Resources tab show each setting.
165 lbs., on both frames, with or without the transit tie-down and the depth adjustable back.
Motion Composites gives a transport weight of 13.1 lbs. for the Kids A and 11.3 lbs. for the Kids C at 12" x 12", without the rear wheels, armrests or side guards, seat cushion, anti-tippers, depth adjustable back and footrests. With rear wheels, wheel locks, footrests, back upholstery and seat cushion the Kids A starts at 22.9 lbs. and the Kids C at 21.1 lbs.
Only if you order the WC-19 transit tie-down. It is not sold with the caster pin locks, the amputee axle plate or the oxygen tank holder, and it may interfere with the clamp on height adjustable push handles.
The front seat height depends on the caster size, the fork and the stem bolt, and the rear seat height on the rear wheel size. The page offers only the heights on Motion Composites' charts for the parts you chose. The caster pin locks need a longer stem bolt.
Motion Composites' order form allows only the Newton aluminum adjustable angle footplate on a 12" or 13" wide frame. The elevating legrest and the Newton Ultralight package are not sold at those widths either.
The chair ships without the seat sling and the slip-on back upholstery, for a family or clinic fitting its own seating. Motion Composites lists that version $100 lower. We sell it at the same price as the upholstered chair.
The order form lists every back cane as aluminum, and it describes the Kids C carbon fiber frame as including carbon fiber back canes. We confirm the cane material with Motion Composites when we place a Kids C order.
They come in the 18 colors plus black. Motion Composites notes the finish on the handrims may differ slightly from the frame, and colors on screen are for reference only. The color photographs on this page show the Kids A.
No. This page offers every size and color on the order form. Custom paint and Motion Composites' EVO Custom requests need a written spec, so they are not offered here.
Motion Composites warrants the aluminum frame and cross brace for life to the first user, with an expected frame life of five years, and the carbon fiber frame, cross brace, back canes, side guards and footplates for life to the first user. Components are covered for one year. Tires, tubes, seat slings, standard back upholstery, armrests and push handle grips are covered for 30 days.

Yes. Your progress saves automatically in your browser as you go, so you can step away and pick up where you left off on the same device.
Every combination is checked against Motion Composites' own compatibility rules as you build. An option that does not fit your other choices is greyed out with the reason printed on it, and the build cannot be added to the cart while a conflict is open.
