The Zippie Sphynx is Sunrise Medical's folding pediatric tilt wheelchair for families on the move, built to order from Sunrise's own order form.
You choose the base chair, transit, seat tilt, sizes, footrest range, upholstery, positioning and accessories, and every choice is checked against Sunrise's rules and its seat to footplate chart as you build.
What stands out
Folds in one step
The Sphynx folds in one step to 34" by 25.5" by 16.75", small enough for the trunk of a compact car, and it weighs 30 lbs.
Tilt and recline
The seat tilt is set at 10, 20 or 30 degrees, and the back reclines from 85 to 100 degrees without tools, so a caregiver can change the child's position through the day.
Grows with the child
Every seat width has a depth range with up to 5" of growth built in, and the footrest range adjusts for a changing or uneven lower leg length.
Standard or rehab seating
Choose the Sphynx upholstery in black, red, blue, green or pink, or leave it off and fit JAY or WHITMYER seating and positioning.
Rides in a vehicle
The Sphynx is crash tested for occupied transit under ANSI/RESNA WC-19. Choose a transit included base or add the transit system.
Footrests from Sunrise's chart
Give the child's seat to footplate distance and the build keeps open only the footrest ranges that Sunrise's chart says reach it at your seat width and depth.

Take an upholstered base for a child who sits well on Sunrise's standard seating, and the base without upholstery if the child's therapist is fitting a JAY cushion and back. Choose transit if the child will ride in a vehicle seated in the chair. Set the tilt with the therapist, since 10 degrees suits good trunk control and 30 degrees gives the most support. Give the seat to footplate distance if you know it, so only the footrest ranges that reach it stay open, and take the child's measurements with Sunrise's measuring guide on the Resources tab before you build.

Sunrise codes it as a tilt wheelchair, and it looks and handles like a stroller. It has 12" rear wheels, 6" casters, a stroller handle and a foot wheel lock.
Measure the child seated on a firm surface. Hip width is the widest point across the hips. Seat depth is from the back of the hips to the back of the knee. Seat to footplate distance is from the back of the knee to the bottom of the heel. Sunrise's measuring guide is on the Resources tab.
Yes. The tilt is set at 10, 20 or 30 degrees and can be moved between them with tools as the child's needs change. The back recline adjusts from 85 to 100 degrees without tools.
When you give a seat to footplate distance, Sunrise's chart decides which of the four ranges reach it at your seat width and depth. The others are greyed with the reason.
The package base includes transit, Sphynx upholstery, the canopy, the underseat basket and the rain cover. The headrest extension comes with transit on any upholstered chair.
They do not work with a choice you have already made. The reason is printed on the option, and every rule comes from Sunrise's order form.
