The center of the aluminum shell is open, so a spinal curve or a prominent spine can sink into it and carry less pressure than it would against a solid back.

Cables run across the opening, and each is tightened with a dial that clicks in 1 mm steps. You set the pelvic, lumbar and upper cables in turn for an even hold.

The Hieline Take
The Relief is the Comfort back for a spine that should not press against a solid shell. Its center is open, and the BOA cables across the opening take the load while the curve sinks in, so a scoliosis or a prominent spine carries less pressure. Three dials tune the cables a millimeter at a time, which lets a clinician set it closely and reset it as a posture changes. The Relief LTS adds lateral pads when the trunk also needs holding upright from the sides. It tops out at 20" wide and 300 lbs., so look at the Comfort Unite or Embrace beyond that. Measure your back canes for the width and choose Compass 4 hardware unless your power chair is one of the five the power mount names.

The owner's manual for this product has its own warranty section, and that section is the complete statement of what Comfort Company covers, for how long, and what falls outside the coverage. Read it before you file a claim. If anything on this page differs from the manual, go by the manual.
A back support sits against the body, so once it ships it cannot be returned. Measure your wheelchair's back canes before you order and use the build steps above. The warranty is unaffected, so a defect is still covered.

Permobil designed it for people with a spinal curve or deformity that needs less pressure than a solid back gives, because the open shell lets the spine immerse. Your seating clinician can tell you whether it suits you.
Should I choose the Relief or the Relief LTS?
Both are the same open back with the BOA Fit System. The Relief LTS adds two lateral trunk support pads that hold the trunk upright from the sides, and it costs $317 more at the smaller sizes.
How do I choose the width?
Measure your wheelchair from the outside of one back cane to the outside of the other, and choose that width, from 14" to 20".
How do I choose the height?
The height is the length of the shell from its lower edge to its upper edge. Permobil's manual says the lower edge must rest against the back of the pelvis, so measure up from there. The Relief comes 10" to 22" tall and the Relief LTS 12" to 22".
How do I adjust the BOA dials?
Sit in your usual position, pop each dial open to release the cable, and let yourself settle into the back. Then push each dial in and turn it to tighten, lowest cable first, then the middle one, then the top. Check the fit from time to time and reset it if you move the back to another chair or user.
What is the weight limit?
300 lbs. at 20" wide and 250 lbs. at 14" to 18" wide, from Permobil's manual. Permobil's Relief page lists 300 lb.
Which mounting hardware do I need?
Compass 4 hardware clamps to the back canes of most manual and power chairs. Quick release lets you lift the back off in seconds, and fixed stays on. A 10" tall Relief and a 12" tall Relief LTS need 2 point Compass 4 hardware. Choose power mount hardware only if your power chair is one of the five named.
Which cover should I choose?
Comfort-Tek is fluid resistant and wipes clean. Diamond Spacer breathes and carries heat away, and it is not fluid resistant. Both cost the same.
Is this the Acta-Relief back?
Yes. Permobil renamed the ACTA-Relief and ACTA-Relief LTS to Comfort Relief and Comfort Relief LTS, with upgraded components.
What comes in the box?
The back shell with its BOA Fit System, the cover with its foam, the mounting hardware you choose and Permobil's operation manual. The Relief LTS also comes with its two lateral pads on fixed hardware.
How long is the warranty?
Permobil's Comfort Company warranty covers the back shell, hardware and foam for 5 years and the cover for 6 months against manufacturing defects.
Can I return it?
No. A back support sits against the body, so it cannot be returned once it ships. The warranty still covers defects.
