What stands out

Folds in about three seconds

The aircraft-grade aluminum alloy frame folds to 30" x 23.5" x 14" with the 17.5" seat. Nothing comes apart and no tools are needed.

Two lithium batteries to choose from

The 12Ah (288Wh) runs up to 13 miles and is airline and cruise approved. The 20Ah (480Wh) runs up to 19 miles and is not. Both charge in 6 to 8 hours from a home outlet.

Two seat widths at one price

17.5" or 20" across, and ComfyGo sells an armrest extension kit that adds 1.2" per side. The cushion is memory foam with cooling gel inserts, and six colored textiles are available.

Electromagnetic brakes on solid tires

The brakes are built into both motors and hold the chair on a slope. The 12" rear and 8" front tires are solid, so there is nothing to inflate and nothing to puncture.

The Hieline Take

The IQ-8000 is the folding chair to look at when capacity matters more than weight. It carries 330 lbs. where most folding chairs stop at 300, the 20" seat costs the same as the 17.5", and a caregiver can drive it from behind on the remote, which is the feature people actually use on a trip. The honest caveat is weight and range. At 52.9 lbs. before the battery it is roughly 13 lbs. heavier than the Jazzy Carbon and 25 lbs. heavier than the Jazzy Carbon 27, and one person lifting it into a trunk will feel that. The long range battery reaches 19 miles and it is the one battery airlines and cruise lines will not take, so you choose range or air travel and you cannot have both. If you fly often and lift the chair yourself, the Jazzy Carbon 27 is 27.8 lbs. before its 4.6 lbs. battery goes in, at 300 lbs. of capacity. If you want a headrest, this model is sold without one.

How to measure for a wheelchair

Getting the right wheelchair starts with getting the right fit. A chair that is too wide, too narrow, too deep or too short is uncomfortable and hard to use.

You do not need dozens of measurements to get started. For most manual wheelchairs, transport chairs and power wheelchairs, the five below will get you to the right size.

Before you measure

Sit upright in a firm chair. Wear the shoes and the clothing you expect to use with the wheelchair. Have someone help you, because the measurements are far more accurate when somebody else holds the tape.

  1. Measurement A. Hip width

    Measure the widest part of your hips or thighs while seated. Keep the tape straight across your body rather than wrapping it around you.

    This is the measurement that points you at a seat width.

    Leave yourself a little room. If your seated hip width is about 19", look at a seat that gives you a small amount of clearance rather than one measuring exactly 19".

    Do not go wider than you need. A wider seat makes the whole wheelchair wider, and that makes doorways and indoor turns harder.

  2. Measurement B. Seat depth, also called upper leg length

    Measure from the back of your buttocks to the crease behind your knee while seated.

    The front edge of the seat should never press against the back of your knees. Aim for about 1" to 2" of space between the seat edge and the back of the knee.

    A seat that is too deep presses behind the knees. A seat that is too shallow leaves your thighs without support.

  3. Measurement C. Lower leg length

    Measure from the crease behind your knee down to the bottom of your heel, wearing your normal shoes. Keep your knee bent at about 90 degrees.

    This one tells you about seat-to-floor height, footrest height, legrest adjustment and footplate position.

    If the wheelchair comes with a cushion, remember the cushion raises your seated height.

  4. Measurement D. Back height

    Sitting upright, measure straight up from the seat surface to where you want the top of the backrest to sit.

    The right back height depends on how much upper-body support you need. A lower back gives an active manual wheelchair user more freedom to move. A higher back gives more trunk and upper-body support.

  5. Measurement E. Elbow height, where the armrests adjust

    Relax your shoulders, let your arms hang at your sides, and bend your elbow to about 90 degrees. Measure straight up from the seat surface to the bottom of your elbow.

    This gives you a comfortable armrest height on any chair with height-adjustable armrests.

Weight capacity

Always compare the rider's weight against the manufacturer's stated weight capacity. Never choose a wheelchair rated below the rider's actual weight.

If the rider is close to a chair's maximum, move up to a higher-capacity model.

Make sure the wheelchair fits your home

Seat size is only half of it. Before you order, compare the wheelchair's overall dimensions against the places it has to go. Measure:

  • The narrowest doorway it has to pass through
  • Hallways and tight corners
  • The bathroom entrance
  • The bedroom entrance
  • Elevators, if you use one
  • Your vehicle's cargo space, if the chair travels

Check the manufacturer's listed overall width as well as the seat width. A wheelchair with a 20" seat measures considerably more than 20" from wheel to wheel.

For a power wheelchair, check the listed turning radius too, so you know it can turn where you need it to.

Cushion Color

Standard is the plain black seat the chair comes with, at no extra cost.

The six colors, Black, Blue, Gray, Purple, Red and Taba, are an upgraded quilted leather cushion and backrest that wipes clean, and they add $100.

Every option sits on the same memory foam with cooling gel inserts, so this choice is about the covering and the color rather than the comfort.

This is two choices in one, and the seat width is the one worth taking time over.

Seat width is 17.5" or 20", measured across the widest point between the armrest supports. Sit upright, have someone measure the widest part of your hips, then add about two inches so you are not pressed against the armrests. Both widths cost the same, and ComfyGo sells an armrest extension kit that adds 1.2" per side.

The battery is what sets the range. The 12Ah runs up to 13 miles and is the one approved for airlines and cruise lines. The 20Ah runs up to 19 miles, adds $200, and is approved for neither. Both charge in 6 to 8 hours.

Every range figure is measured on flat ground with a new battery. Hills, carpet, cold weather and a heavier rider all reduce it, so plan around roughly two thirds of the published number.

Curbside is the free option. The power wheelchair ships from the manufacturer straight to your address. Allow about two to three days for the order to be processed and shipped, then about five more in transit depending on where you live. No carrier in this trade quotes an exact date, so treat both figures as estimates rather than promises. It arrives boxed at the curb, and getting it inside is yours to arrange.

This one comes in a single box and the setup is not hard. The box goes through a normal doorway and most people manage it on their own. The free option is a fair choice here.

Inside delivery means we bring it just inside your front door or into the garage, still in its packaging.

White glove takes a different route. It does not come to your address first. It ships to the delivery technician nearest you, and once it arrives there the technician calls you and books a time that suits you, then brings it into your home, sets it up in the room you choose, checks it for shipping damage and takes all the packaging away. That extra leg adds a few days, and the date is settled between you and the technician, so we cannot give you one up front.
