The Newton Grade Aid is Motion Composites' three position wheel lock: free, grade aid and locked. It is sold as a pair or by the side, on a standard or an extended rail, with or without a 6" removable handle.
One lever that locks the wheel, frees it or holds you on a hill
The Newton Grade Aid is a push to lock wheel lock with a third position between free and locked. In that position the wheel rolls forward and cannot roll back.

NEWTON Grade Aid Wheel Lock
Built for real life
What stands out
●
Three positions on one lever
Free, grade aid and locked. There is no second device to fit beside the wheel lock.
●
Holds on a slope
In the grade aid position the wheel rolls forward and is blocked from rolling back, so you can pause on a ramp with both hands free.
●
A low handle
The handle sits low, which leaves the side of the chair clear for a sideways transfer.
●
Releases before it pinches
Motion Composites designed the mechanism to disengage on its own before it can catch your thumb.
The Hieline Take
A grade aid earns its place on ramps and hills. Set the lever to the middle position and the rear wheel turns forward freely while the lock catches it the moment it tries to roll back, so you can stop to rest or reposition your hands partway up a slope without holding the chair. Push the lever the rest of the way and it becomes an ordinary wheel lock for transfers. Motion Composites lists the unit at 156 g and built the handle low so it stays out of the way of a sideways transfer. It bites the tire tread to hold, so Motion Composites suggests it with a pneumatic or high pressure tire. Order the pair or a single side, match the rail to the locks on your chair now, and set the gap to the tire at about 1 mm when you install it, as the instruction sheet shows.

Call us first at 1-855-HIELINE. We file the claim with Motion Composites for you and get the covered part sorted out rather than handing you a phone number.
How does the grade aid position work?
With the lever in the middle position, the rear wheel can only turn forward. Backward movement is blocked by the wheel lock. Push the lever fully and the wheel is locked in both directions. Pull it back and the wheel is free.
Can I order both sides at once?
Yes. Under Side, choose Pair, and both wheel locks go in the cart together at the price of the two. Choose Right or Left to order one side.
Standard rail or extended rail?
Match the rail on the wheel locks your chair has now. Motion Composites makes the Grade Aid on both. If you are not sure, send us the chair's serial number with your order and we check it with Motion Composites before it ships.
Do I need the 6" handle?
It is optional. The handle lifts off, and it adds leverage and reach for a user with less hand strength.
Which tires does it work with?
Motion Composites suggests the Grade Aid with a pneumatic or high pressure tire, because the lock grips the tire to hold the chair.
How is it adjusted?
Slide the lock in its clamp until there is about 1 mm between the lock and the tire, then tighten the clamp screws to 7 Nm with a 4 mm key or 12 Nm with a 5 mm key, with a drop of blue threadlocker. The grade aid tension screw is set before the lock goes on the chair. Motion Composites' instruction sheet is under Resources, and it asks for a regular check of the adjustment.
What should I have ready when I order?
The serial number of your Motion Composites wheelchair. Motion Composites asks for it on every parts order. Send it to us with your order number after you check out, and we match the part to the way your chair was built.
Will it fit a wheelchair from another brand?
Motion Composites publishes the fit for its own wheelchairs only, so we cannot promise it on another brand. Check the dimensions on this page against your chair before you order.
What is the warranty?
Motion Composites warrants its components for 1 year from the date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship. Normal wear and tear is not covered.
Can I return it?
No. Parts and accessories cannot be returned, so check the size, the side and the fit before you order. If it arrives damaged or defective, tell us within 48 hours of delivery.
Is Hieline an authorized Motion Composites dealer?
Yes. Hieline is a Motion Composites dealer and orders Newton parts directly from Motion Composites, which makes them.
Choose the rail that matches the wheel locks on your chair now. Motion Composites makes the Grade Aid on a standard rail and on an extended rail. The 6" handle lifts off and gives more leverage.
