The XLX FlexRim is the cross-laced XLX with a handrim bonded to the rim by a band of urethane. It is sold as a pair in 24" and 25", two hubs and nine spoke colors.

Handrim built in
An aluminum handrim is bonded to the side of the rim by a band of urethane. Nothing has to be fitted.

A shape that fills the hand
The urethane band gives the rim an oval shape. Spinergy says it is easier to grab and puts less strain on the hands.

Squeezing both handrims takes about 1/2" off the width of the chair for a tight space.

The Hieline Take
The XLX FlexRim puts Spinergy's bonded handrim on the cross-laced XLX wheel. The handrim is joined to the side of the rim by a band of urethane, so there is no gap between the two and you can push without your hand touching the tire. The band has an oval shape that fills the hand, and it lets the handrim flex inward, so squeezing both sides takes about 1/2" off the width of the chair in a tight doorway. Under it is the XLX, whose crossed outside spokes make the wheel answer a hard push sooner than the radial LX. You pay for a wheel and a handrim together, and the handrim cannot be swapped for another kind later. The urethane is a wear part: a small separation can be glued with Spinergy's repair kit, and wear is not covered by the warranty. Tires, tubes and axles are separate, and wheels cannot be returned. Check the list of makes in the specifications, or measure the hub you have now, before you order.

Wheels cannot be returned. Check the size, the hub and the spoke color on this page before you order. If they arrive damaged or defective, tell us within 48 hours of delivery and we will get them repaired or replaced at no cost to you.

Is the price for one wheel or for a pair?
For a pair. One unit in the cart is two wheels.
What comes in the box?
Two wheels with their hubs, bearings and FlexRim handrims. Tires, tubes and axles are not included.
What is a FlexRim?
A handrim that is bonded to the wheel rim by a band of urethane. The band gives the rim an oval shape that fills the hand, and it lets the handrim flex inward when you squeeze it.
Does the FlexRim make my chair narrower?
While you squeeze, yes. Spinergy says pressing the two handrims in takes about 1/2" off the width of the chair, which helps through a tight doorway. The width goes back when you let go.
Can the urethane come away from the rim?
A small separation can happen with use. Spinergy supplies a repair kit and says a clean separation of 3" or less can be glued again, and that it should be done before the gap grows.
Which hub fits my wheelchair?
It depends on the make of your chair. The standard hub fits most everyday chairs from TiLite, Motion Composites, Ki Mobility, Invacare, Top End and Pride. The X2 hub fits most from Quickie, RGK, Colours, Kuschall, PDG, Per4Max and Box. The full list by make is in the specifications. If your chair is not on it, measure the hub on the wheel you have now, from the outside of one bearing to the outside of the other: 1.8" is the standard hub and 2.3" is the X2.
What is the difference between the standard hub and the X2 hub?
The distance between the two bearings. The standard hub measures 1.8" and sets the wheel closer to the chair. The X2 hub measures 2.3" and sets the wheel a little further out, which some frames need so the spokes clear the chair.
Which size do I need?
The size on your chair now. Read the number on the tire sidewall: 540 is a 24" wheel and 559 is a 25" wheel.
Which axle length do I need?
Axles are not included, and you can add a pair under "Add axles" on this page. The length depends on your chair. Spinergy's axle chart gives these lengths for the XLX, which has the same hubs as this wheel. 3.75": Aria, Hands On Concepts, Ki Mobility, Melrose, Panthera, Reckless, TiLite and Vesco. 4.00": Levo, Miki, Mogo, Motion Composites and Roma. 4.25": Colours, GTM, Invacare, Top End, Kuschall, Lasher, newer P4X chairs and the RGK Octane Sub 4 and Tiga. 4.50": Kinesis, Lifestand, Quickie and older P4X chairs. 4.75": Box, Brand New Wheelchair and the other RGK chairs. A Ki chair with height adjustable armrests takes 0.25" more, except the Ethos, which takes 3.75". A Quickie more than 10 years old takes 0.25" less. The chart lists Box, GTM, Kuschall, Lifestand, P4X, Quickie and RGK on the X2 hub. If your chair is not on the chart, the length depends on two things: the length of the axle receiver in your camber tube, and the distance from the outside of one hub bearing to the outside of the other. Measure both and you have the axle length.
Which tires fit?
Any wheelchair tire in the matching size, 1" or 1-3/8" wide. A 26" x 1.95" mountain bike tire fits the 25" (559) wheel.
Why fiber spokes and not steel?
Spinergy rates its PBO fiber at three times the strength of steel and half the weight, and the fiber absorbs 25% more shock and vibration than a steel spoke.
Why do the photographs of black spokes show a silver hub?
Spinergy photographs the XLX FlexRim with black spokes on its silver hub only. The black hub you get with "Black with black hub" is the hub shown in the photographs of the colored spokes.
What maintenance do the wheels need?
Keep them clean. Now and then take the wheels off the chair, pull the axle and wipe the bearings, the hub and the axle with a dry rag. The bearings are sealed and need no grease. Check that the spokes are tight, the rim is undamaged and the tires hold their pressure.
What is the warranty?
Spinergy warrants the wheels for 1 year from the date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, for the original owner. Keep your receipt. Bearing wear, crash damage and sports such as basketball, quad rugby and tennis are not covered.
