The Hieline Take

The Hoyer Long Seat Sling is a hammock style sling with no divided legs, so it carries the seat and both thighs on one surface. The top of the sling sits at the shoulder blades, so the head may need a hand during the lift. Joerns designed it for amputees, and it also suits a person who stays in the sling for a long time, for example while the bed is made or during bathing. It is normally fitted while the person is lying down. Joerns says its optional side suspenders make the transfer more comfortable. It has webbing loops for the Hoyer 6-point spreader bar, which the Hoyer Advance and the Hoyer Presence carry as standard. The colored loops on each strap set how upright or reclined the person sits. The safe working load is 500 lbs., and the lift's own capacity still applies. The binding on the edge is color coded by size, and Joerns gives a weight range for each size as a starting point. Joerns asks that a competent person assesses the person, the sling and the transfer before any sling is used.

Straight talk

Is it right for you?

A good fit if you

  • are an amputee
  • stay in the sling for a longer period
  • use a Hoyer Advance or Presence with the 6-point spreader bar

Look elsewhere if you

  • need the sling put on in a chair, where the Hoyer Quick Fit sling is quicker
  • use a lift with the 4-point positioning cradle, which takes clip slings
